Esperanza, Sultan Kudarat (12 oz Bag)
Sitio San Roque sits at the foothills of the Mt. Kalatungan range, a protected, biodiverse
area that’s home to several endemic flora and fauna, as well as the Manobo tribe. With
rich, volcanic soil and a unique microclimate, it is an ideal place to grow coffee. The
Manobo initially cultivated it for consumption, then moved to commercial production up
until coffee prices significantly dropped in the 1960s. This led them to switch to
sugarcane and corn as their primary crops.
The coffee on this side of the country had potential. To improve quality, Kalsada built its
own mill in Sitio San Roque in 2020. Cherries processed here come from different areas
of Mt. Kalatungan–from Talakag, Bukidnon—to other provinces as far as Sultan
Kudarat. Within three years, Sitio San Roque became Kalsada’s Mindanao hub, where
361 farmer-families bring in their yields and process the cherries themselves.
This coffee comes from a Private Estate in Esperanza, Sultan Kudarat. The estate has
been growing coffee since the late 1980s and has employed the indigenous community
surrounding it. After ripe cherries are harvested, they are stored in grainpro bags, and
travel for 5-6 hours before reaching the Sitio San Roque Mill. Upon arrival, the cherries
are pulped and fermented in water for 36-48 hours before they are washed and placed
on drying beds.
About Kalsada:
Kalsada Coffee was created with a mission to support Philippine coffee producers and their dedicated efforts to bring specialty coffee to the market. We value partnership and collaboration, and we build trust by consulting with local famer communities, listening to their input and concerns, and finding ways to help them succeed. We help farmers meet quality standards by providing training and investing in machinery and equipment. We also focus on helping farmers build sustainable farms for future generations of growers.
Our mills are built on shared ancestral property of the farmers. In our first year of production in 2014, we processed coffees in Sitio Belis, our first mill in Atok, Benguet. Our second mill, Sitio Naguey, is less than a mile away from Sitio Belis, and Sitio Kisbong is approximately 12 miles away. Our most recent mill, Sitio Pigtauranan, was built in 2020 and is located on the opposite end of the country in Bukidnon, Mindanao. We initially worked with 15 farmers, have since grown to working with over 100 and counting!
Through our work, we hope to encourage future generations of Filipino coffee growers, and to spread the word about Philippine specialty coffee.
